It is Never Too Late to Start an Exercise Program

As I mentioned in a previous blog, one unfortunate fact about the aging process is that our muscle mass decreases as we age. The good news is whether you are in your 30’s, middle-age, or older, research shows it is never too late to start an exercise program that includes weight/strength training to counteract that process.

Exercise physiologist Richard Weil, MEd, CDE, reports the following encouraging results from a study of 100 male and female residents aged 72 to 98 years old (average age was 87) at a Boston nursing home. He discovered that after lifting weights with their legs 3 times a week for only 10 weeks, participants’ thigh muscle mass increased 2.7%, their walking speed increased 12%, and their leg strength increased a whopping 113%!

He also reported that in a similar study of participants aged 65-79, those who lifted weights three times a week for three months increased their walking endurance by 38% (from 25 minutes to 34 minutes).
